Definitions: (verb) If you have established something, you have started it, and it is expected to last for a long time. (adjective) If an institution, system, etc. is established, it has existed for some time and is probably well known.

Examples: (verb) The government was established in 1765. (verb) Now that we’ve established the reasons for the flooding, we can stop it happening again. (adjective) The fact that the earth is not in the centre of the universe is well established. (adjective) The established leaders often do no wish to see changes that might reduce their power.
