Start your conclusion with a conclusion signal such as ‘In conclusion’ or ‘to conclude’.

Restate your position/opinion. Don’t copy exactly what you wrote in the introduction but paraphrase it.

In conclusion, it is certainly beneficial for children to start studying a foreign language at primary school rather than high school for a number of reasons.

Summarise the main ideas which you have given in support of your position in the introduction. Remember each main idea should be the topic of one body paragraph. Your essay should have 2 or 3 main ideas. Below is an example of how to summarise your main points.

Students acquire new vocabulary much more easily than adults and studies show that learning a second language as a child is good for the brain and so benefits children in the study of other subjects and finally it may encourage a lifelong interest in languages which will be of benefit socially and in the search for a job.

In the final sentence of the conclusion you should write a personal comment or suggestion about the topic.

Based on these reasons it is clear that all schools should offer at least one foreign language to elementary age students.

Common Errors

  1. The conclusion is too long. A conclusion should always be shorter than the main body paragraphs.
  2. A new argument is introduced in the conclusion. Never introduce new information in the conclusion. New information should always be in the main body paragraphs.
